MBA students from Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) devised a new custom bags for wine transport through a year-long engagement with ClearView Packaging Company. The students arrived to the ClearView Packaging plant in September 2015 tasked with finding a need in any market of their choosing that could provide an innovative solution to a common custom bag packaging problem. The RPI students narrowed their option down throughout the Fall semester as they dug deeper into end user wants and needs, price points and market size.
By the beginning of the Spring semester, a new spin on a custom bag for carry-out wine stores was the one decided on to have the most potential. The Spring semester was spent devising models and prototypes, determining the proper route to the market and pinning down costs. The final “No Roll Wine Bag” prototype, costing and means to market was presented by the students May 16 2016 in front of their professors and the ClearView Packaging team. The “No Roll Wine Bag” addresses three main pain points for end users in comparison to brown paper bags: the bubble walls provide protection for wine bottles in transit, the construction of the bag prevents the bottle from rolling and the built in handle provides ease in transport. ClearView Packaging key manager Brian Goodman summed it up in stating “The RPI students have provided us a great start to a new custom bag potential product. We thank them for their time and efforts.”
